I know why they bastardized the King Arthur Carrousel in March 1982... do you? (I'll give you a hint: there's a Sherman Brothers connection!)
UPDATE: See below the photographs...
Todd Pierce has correctly surmised that Disneyland outfitted the Carrousel this way for filming a Magic Journeys scene. The film features a Sherman Brothers theme. Bruce Gordon told me that the film shows the big tarp they used to hide all this construction!
A Sherman Brothers connection, eh? I can't even imagine what they would have to do with the Carrousel!
ReplyDeleteSo, what's with the strange animals on the pictured carrousel? They are cool, but I thought Disneyland always had just horses, even if they weren't always white.
I'll update this post tomorrow if nobody's answered by then. I can tell you that Guests never had the opportunity to ride these frightening animals.
ReplyDeleteMore nightmares!!! That giant pig looks related to the original 3 little pigs that used to roam Disneyland. I can't imagine why this was done, thanks for frightening us with these images :-)
ReplyDeleteBased on the date (and the big pile of dirt!), obviously the main part of Fantasyland was closed. The Sherman Brothers' main connection to Carrousels is Mary Poppins, but the Jolly Holiday sequence used horses. Hmmm...I don't know; are they real? I'm glad you're going to give the answer tomorrow because otherwise it could be a secret we will never, never know.
ReplyDeleteOK, this is just a wild / out-there guess. But wasn't Magic Journeys shot in 1981/1982. And wasn't there a carousel in that 3d movie? And didn't the Sherman brothers write the music for that film? So my guess would be this: the carousel was mocked up for a sequence in Magic Journeys. But then, this is a total guess.
